Welcome to Musque Tartare/Florida Soul

WELCOME TO MUSIQUE TARTARE!

One of the gifts of growing up in Michigan  was when on a clear night I would tune in a clear CBC signal after 10pm.   There it was...something I never, ever, would've heard over my local stations....Closed Head Injury, American Music Club, Tackhead, The Legendary Pink Dots, Zoviet France, Silver Apples...to name a paltry few... This was a world revealed, an untapped source of obscure, yet compelling tunes from programs like Brent Bambury's  "Brave New Waves" or  David Wisdom's 'Nightlines".  It was a treasure trove of well curated precious gems  from indie scenes all over the map and from different decades.  In a pre-internet world this was the key to being the ultimate music snob!  It was like the awesome friend that always new about the latest band, you know the one YOU liked and only they knew how to get the records!

One of the many ironies of our high tech age is that there are near infinite streams of music, new and old.  Yet our narrow social dashboards don't allow for happy revelations like those of my youth since so much of what shows up is part of our self-dictated algorithm.

I hope this podcast blog thingy can uncover some rare precious gems from music of every genre for you too.  The raw, the Rock N' Roll, the extra extra rare.  Welcome to Musique Tartare and thank you!

EPISODE 101 --FLORIDA CHRISTIAN FUNK

This week's podcast is about the christian funk explosion (yes it was a thing)  in the deep south from the 1970's...When you first hear "Florida" and "Christian" you might think it's going to be a bunch of snake handling gibberish by people whiter than a Jimmy John's bag.  But fear not, the "FUNK" element to the equation is greasy enough to make even Oral Roberts shake his 500 ft tall Jesus....Mostly based in Miami, acts like the Moovers (pic below) got down with some cool diy vinyl grooves in the name of the lord and giant collars and leisure suits. If you like vibrant soul with a raw lo-fi finish (think gospel +James Brown +Jon Spencer Blues Explosion- Irony)...here's a preview of some of the tunes coming up!

Give it a minute for the tubes to warm up and enjoy!
